Matthew Chatburn is an Australian-born photographer living and working in Austin TX. We recently got a chance to catch up with him about his new CASTLEKINGS zine project.
What’s the concept behind the CASTLEKINGS zine?
My heart behind this magazine is to see artists collaborating on something, to make something tangible in history. I feel as though I saw a gap in the market where there were only arts and culture magazines, or just men’s magazines or just women’s magazines. I saw that there isn’t any publications that zone in on the men in the arts world. So hence why CASTLEKINGS is an arts and culture mens journal. We highlight and for our main features men who are changing the course in art, design, film and photo. Pushing the boundaries.
So cool, man. Love that idea of creating something honest that’s really focused on people. Who have you collaborated with so far? Any exciting new features coming up?
I have collaborated with New York designer DREU, with his 14 collection and soon to be 2015. I've just signed on LA based artist Scott Laufer—I’m pretty excited about him. We also have a collaboration with Dennis Hopper's art trust.
Dennis Hoppers art trust... that sounds awesome. What is that project looking like and where did the idea come from?
The idea came from reading a bio on Mr Hopper, finding out more about who he was as a person and artist. He was messed up a lot of the time with life throwing a lot of things at him but at the core he just wanted to create art, and I think in life that's really something to look up to.
It's always hard with these things, going through people and what images we can use and not use. They have preserved a lot of it and it's rad to see that people keep pride in keeping what people have done who have gone before us.
Love that. Can’t wait to see it come together. As for the future for CASTLEKINGS, any big dates coming up that we should know about?
Yep! We are launching a indiegogo and a new site in June and the print issue will be launching in July here in Austin with a party at one of our features pads. The site will be having some extra goodies on it like interviews and videos as well. We are excited and are at the beginning stages of creating this community.
